Binghamton is a city that is located in the south central part of New York State in the United States. Bnghamton has two nicknames. One of them is "The Parlor City", and the other is "The Carousel Capital of the World." Six antique Herschell carousels were donated to the city in the early 20th century. Those carousels are on the National Register of Historical Places. Though the village of Binghamton wasn't founded until 1834, the land that the city now sits on was originally purchased by William Bingham in 1792. The settlers who would organize on that land a few decades later would name the city after him. Binghamton was not originally founded as a city. In 1914, IBM, a technology corporation, moved into the city, giving the metro area a major employer.
