  • Lin Voong

A Vietnamese immigrant named Lin Voong, who also used the alias Jiverly Voong or Jiverly Wong, was named as the suspect in the shooting according to the Associated Press. Reports indicated that Voong borrowed a 1993 Toyota, from a relative with the same last name, to drive to a class at the Civic Association on the day of the shooting spree. It has been reported that Voong, age 42, had recently lost a job with IBM, but this has not been confirmed as of April 4, 2009.Press & Sun-Bulletin: Fourteen dead in Binghamton shooting (April 4, 2009)

  • Premeditation

Voong was wearing body armor when he drove a borrowed automobile up to the rear door of the center, to block escape. He then entered the Civic Center, about 10:00 am on April 3, 2009 and began shooting with two handguns, a .45 caliber Beretta and a 9-millimeter Beretta. A 911 call from wounded receptionist Shirley DeLucia alerted police who arrived at the scene minutes later. The shooting had stopped by the time the police arrived, but they waited for hours before finally entering the building. They found several people killed in a classroom, 37 people hiding in closets and a boiler room, and the dead gunman.New York Times: Binghamton Looks for Reason Gunman Killed 14 (April 4, 2009)
