William J. Lynn was named as Barack Obama's choice for deputy secretary of the Defense Department. Confirmation by the senate has been delayed concerning issues raised around Lynn's involvement with lobbying for security technology firm Raytheon during his service as the company's senior vice president of Government Operations and Strategy.
Since his employment with Raytheon required lobbying on his part, his appointment came under fire after President Obama signed executive orders concerning the ethics of his administration, banning administration members from dealing with a matter in which they have lobbied for in the previous two years. As deputy secretary of the Defense Department, Lynn would be responsible of many of the same projects in which he lobbied for with Raytheon.
