Types of Bilingual Education
- Submersion is when a student is in an English-speaking classroom with native English-speaking children and teachers. The student may still be learning the language or a beginner in the language. The material is taught only in English. The student is expected to learn both the language and the information taught in the classroom.
- Two-way bilingual education consists of teachers that are fluent speakers of English and the language of the child in the classroom. Instructions are then given in both languages. The students of both languages can learn the other language with this method.
- English as a second language or ESL is non-English speaking students placed with English-speaking students for part of the day. The rest of the day, the students are with an ESL teacher. There they will receive individual help. Students are responsible for learning the information in the English-speaking courses.
- Immersion is the practice of students being taught a foreign language for the complete school day. Immersion differs from submersion in that immersion is for the majority language speakers, in this case English, to learn a second language.
- Three language system endeavors to teach children the official state language, an official language of the Union and a third language.http://sitemaker.umich.edu/370blinged/different_types_of_bilingual_educationhttp://www.nabe.org/bilingualed.html
