  • The League of American Bicyclists is encouraging Americans across the country to ride their bikes to work on May 11 - May 15, 2009. Many cities offer events throughout the month, in celebration and recognition of this alternate mode of transportation.

Other countries participate as well, although many of them host Bike to Work Week at different times of the year.

  • How to Prepare

Plan your route in advance and check out potential problems and traffic by driving it. Ride your bike on the route the weekend before and determine how long the ride will take you. Prepare your bicycle by getting it tuned up and the tires filled. Talk to your place of employment and let them know what you plan to do. Discuss a place to park your bike for the day. On the day of the commute, eat breakfast, wear comfortable clothing and bring a change of clothes and toiletries in a backpack, if necessary.California Bike Commute: Checklist
