The Big Ten Conference is comprised of 11 teams that play college basketball at the Division I-A level. For a listing of teams and their conferences, see Mahalo's College Basketball category.
The 11 conference members compete in the regular season, then all of the teams participate in the Big Ten Tournament. Like other conferences that participate in a post-season tournament, the winner of the bracket-style competition will earn an automatic big to play in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
In 2010, the Big Ten Tournament was held from March 11 to March 14 at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball team entered the tournament as the top seed and won the tournament and the corresponding automatic bid, defeating the Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team in the finals.

History
The Big Ten was developed by meeting of seven Midwest University presidents at the Palmer House on January 11, 1895. President of Purdue University James H. Smart and each of the faculty member of those universities officially established the mechanics and the principles for the Intercollegiate Conference which is known as the "Big Ten"
Original members of the Big Ten Institution were the University of Chicago, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin. In 1899, Indiana University and the State University of Iowa joined the conference, while the Ohio State University joined in 1912. Michigan State University was added in 1949 after the University of Chicago withdrew.
On June 4, 1990, the conference expanded to 11 members adding Pennsylvania State University into the conference by the Council of the Presidents.
