Big Ten Basketball Members
History
The Big Ten was developed by meeting of seven Midwest University presidents at the Palmer House on January 11, 1895. President of Purdue University James H. Smart and each of the faculty member of those universities officially established the mechanics and the principles for the Intercollegiate Conference which is known as the "Big Ten"Member of the Big Ten Institution are the University of Chicago, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Purdue University and University of Wisconsin. In 1899, Indiana University and the State University of Iowa joined the conference, the Ohio State in 1912. Michigan State University was added in 1949 after the University of Chicago withdrew.
On June 4, 1990, the conference expanded to 11 members adding Pennsylvania State University into the conference by the Council of the Presidents.
