Established on Feb. 25, 1963, the Big Sky Conference was established by Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. The Big Sky Conference has members from 8 states, ranging from the Pacific West Coast to the Rocky Mountains. The only western-most state not represented in the league is Nevada.
In 1963, the Big Sky Conference was established by six charter members Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. The League expanded in 1970 adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga was replaced by Nevada in 1979 and Eastern Washington became a member in 1987.
The Big Sky first commissioner was Jack Friel from 1963 to 1971, then John Roning from 1971 to 1977, Steve Belko from 1977 to 1981, Ron Stephenson from 1981 to 1995. Doug Fullerton is the current commissioner of the Big Sky Conference entering his 14th year for the 2008-2009 season.
