  • According to Newsday, Big Brown, the horse that failed to win the Triple Crown after finishing last in the Belmont Stakes in 2008, may have had a loose shoe on his rear left foot.
  • The Belmont Stakes

Directly after the race, Michael Iavarone, one of the co-owners of Big Brown's stable, noted that the horse had a loose shoe. However, at the time, Iavarone called the loose shoe "not an issue." On June 21, 2008, the horse racing magazine The Blood-Horse printed a close-up photograph of the thoroughbred's left rear foot during the race which appeared to show a loose shoe. After seeing the photograph, Iavarone was "shocked" and said the shoe could have significantly hindered the champion during the race.
