Big Brother 9 premiered on February 12, 2008 at its regular 9 p.m. time slot on CBS. This season, love and partnership are the themes for the series, so at the start, contestants were randomly paired off as "soul mates." During the initial episodes, couples had to compete, eat, and sleep together, but as of Day 28, they split to individual players.

Big Brother 9 Rules
- Big Brother 9 takes a cast of 16 real people and has them compete in stunts and challenges all while trapped in the same house. The contestants are paired off into "soul mates". The pairs must work together for the prize as well as deal with each other's personality quirks. The goal for each week is to become Head of Household.
- Head of Household are the pair of people who win the weekly challenge. Their reward is immunity, the best bedroom, and private bathroom for the week. They also nominate two other pairs of competitors to be evicted.
- The Power Couple was the couple in the first episode that could pick anyone couple to be evicted for whatever reason they chose.
- Power of Veto is the chance for a competitor who has been nominated for eviction to save themselves. The two nominated teams compete for Power of Veto through a stunt or competition. The PoV is only good for that week and must be fought for again should the team be renominated to leave the house.
- America's Choice is an online voting system where fans of the show can vote to give a favorite couple a special treat or prize.
- Prize Ultimately, the longest lasting competitor (the competition lasts 3 months) wins a cash prize of $500,000.
