Big Bend National Park operates three campgrounds inside the boundaries of the park. They are Rio Grande Village, Chisos Basin and Cottonwood campgrounds. Big Bend National Park Camping
Chisos Basin campground is located in the Chisos Mountains at an altitude of 5,400’ and encircled by high, rocky cliffs. It has sixty campsites that are mostly suited for tent camping but can hold travel trailers up to twenty feet and motor homes up to twenty-four feet. Each site includes a picnic table, charcoal grill and a bear-proof food storage container. Some sites also have a ramada for shade. The Rio Grande Village campground is able to hold some of the larger camping vehicles. It is close to Boquillas Canyon, Hot Springs, Old Ore Road and River Road. It contains tent sites as well as pull-through sites able to hold a 40’ motor home. There are no hook-ups. Generators are allowed from 8:00 am to 8:00pm. These campgrounds sites are similar to the Chisos Basin campground sites in amenities. Cottonwood campground is located in an oasis in the park. It is between Castolon Historical District and Santa Elena Canyon. It has 31 sites and is close to the Rio Grande River so many bird watchers use this campground. This campground is first-come, first-served all year. No generators are allowed and there are no dump stations on the premises. There are pit toilets and potable water spigots. Cottonwood campground contains one group camping site good for tents only. Rio Grande Village RV Campground is the only campground in Big Bend National Park that contains any sites with full-hookups. It has twenty-five sites and is concession-operated. Backcountry Camping
Big Bend National Park contains over 150 miles of mountain and desert trails as well as the largest area of road-less public lands in Texas. All overnight trips require a backcountry use permit and backpackers must pay an entrance fee before entering the backcountry.
