Introduction
- This guide covers the ins and outs of the classic third-person action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil. It was released for the GameCube, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. The controls are mapped differently, but the gameplay is the same.
Jade's Abilities
- Staff
- A powerful weapon that will serve as her primary means of attack.
- You'll get this at the very beginning of the game.
- It can kill a whole lot of Domz monsters.
- Disc Launcher
- The disc launcher fires out spare CDs when in the camera view.
- Use it to trigger buttons and disable the gas tanks on Alpha Sections soldiers.
- Note: You have an unlimited supply of disks.
- Staff Power Attack
- This upgrade can be bought for the staff from Ming-Tzu.
- Once purchased, you can hold down the attack button and charge up an attack.
- Pressing the attack button launches little energy orbs that seek out enemies. This is really effective against Alpha Sections soldiers, since the orbs often hit their gas tanks.
- It will offer a way to take on the Alpha Sections in a straight fight.
- Camera
- You'll unlock the zoom when you turn in your first roll of film.
- Taking pictures of the various animals in the game world will serve as your primary source of income.
Items
- Starkos
- This is just a basic food item. You'll get one heart back if you eat it. It usually costs about 150 credits from a vending machine.
- Box of K-Bups
- This is another food item. The box of K-Bups will heal your health entirely.
- It is also more cost effective, since a box only cost 300 credits.
- You can find them in vending machines, but Nouri has an infinite supply in town.
- POD Repair Unit
- It's a starkos for your ship or hovercraft.
- It will heal one wrench.
- It costs about 150 credits from a vending machine. Mammago garage usually has them in stock.
- Set of PODs
- This is a box of K-Bups for your ship or hovercraft.
- It will heal all of the wrenches on your ship.
- This costs 300 credits from a vending machine. Mammago garage usually has them in stock.
- Boost Unit
- This gives your hovercraft a boost.
- It comes in handy in the races.
- Physiological Accelerator
- This charges your health up. You receive one extra heart for each one in your inventory.
- Giving these to your partners through the inventory screen adds a heart to their health.
- Note: It usually makes more sense to hog them for yourself, since you will be doing most of the fighting.
- They cost about 1500 credits a piece from a vending machine or store.
- Note: I'll abbreviate these as PA's.
- Mecha Impulser
- This charges up your ship or hovercraft. You get an extra wrench for each one of these that you have.
- They cost 1500 credits a piece in vending machines. The machines at Mammago have a few.
- Animal Detector
- This adds a little paw print to your map to reveal the location of an animal.
- It comes in quite handy for finding animals in the game.
- Tip: If you want to find all of them, you should buy this. I can only give directions to a certain point, and some animals move around the map.
- It only costs 1000 credits and it can be a big help.
- You can find it at Ming-Tzu's shop.
- Pearl Detector
- All of the pearls in the game are revealed with this detector. It comes in handy for finding them, obviously.
- Tip: Even if you plan to use this guide, the detector will help. I can only give directions to a point. Having a marker on the map will certainly help.
- It costs 3000 credits and it is available at Ming-Tzu's shop.
- Super Attack Strengthener
- This device makes your super attack fairly useful.
- Hitting the attack button release orbs during your super attack.
- These can be quite useful for taking out multiple weak enemies or hitting the air tanks on an Alpha Sections soldier.
- It costs 2000 credits and is available at Ming-Tzu's shop.
- Gyrodisk Launcher
- You'll find this at one point in the game.
- It lets you launch disks while in the camera mode.
- These can distract or disable Alpha Sections soldiers.
- They can also be used to trigger buttons from a distance.
Party Members
- Pey'j
- Pey'j is your uncle and a valuable aid.
- He can use a special wrench and his jet boots to help with puzzles and combat.
- His help is vital in knocking a number of enemies up in the air.
- Double H
- A loyal soldier in the Hillys army and a special agent for IRIS.
- You will meet him at the Nutripils factory and gain his help for the rest of the game.
- He is heavily armored and good in combat with his hammer and shield.
- His armor makes him immune to all of the lasers in the game.
- He can also use his hard helmet to knock down gates.
- Secundo
- Your AI companion.
- He'll report all of your information, synthesize crystals, and send your photographs to the science office.
Enemies
- Domz Sarcophagus
- These are the first Domz monsters that you'll fight.
- They aren't very strong. They usually just need a few good hits to take them out.
- You'll face them throughout the game.
- Vorax
- You may or may not fight these at the beginning of the game. You'll need to set the shield up to lock them out of the lighthouse area.
- They aren't too tough and you won't run into them much.
- Domz Sea Monster
- You'll face a few of these big guys in boss fights.
- Just keep shooting the tail until it falls apart. They also drop a pearl upon death, so remember to look for it.
- Crochax
- Nasty insects that carry big pearls with them sometimes.
- They are pretty easy to beat if you take them one at a time.
- Just watch out for them to rear back. If they rear back and light up, then they are getting ready to attack. Hit them to interrupt their attack.
- They are also able to pin your partner, so keep an eye on them and knock off any crochax that may have them trapped.
- A few solid whacks and an aggressive stance should let you handle them all.
- Jellies
- These are basically just a way to solve puzzles.
- They are able to zap you if you get too close, but they aren't exactly deadly.
- Just get your partner to knock them up into the air and you can fling them into crystals and bridges to solve the puzzle and move on with the game.
- Shelled Jellies
- They are basically the same as their squishy brethren.
- Same tactics will apply, but watch your back, since they are usually in big groups.
- Palinurus
- This ridiculous blue bug is slow but a bit of a pain to fight.
- They can fall back into their shells to deflect most of your attacks.
- They are mainly a part of a combat puzzle though.
- Just get Pey'j to knock them up into the air. This stuns them and lets you knock them into various targets.
- You can also just knock them off the platform to get rid of them.
- Alpha Sections Zone Guards
- They aren't really enemies, but they are things you'll have to deal with in the game.
- They will guard various zones that the Alpha Sections control.
- You just need to look onto them with the Neutralizer Cannon and zap them.
- Alpha Sections Spiders
- These little spider bots are only seen once in the game.
- There's one big fight with a pack of them in the Nutrilpils factory. Just smack them with the staff.
- Alpha Sections Guardians
- These little roley-poley bots will roll around and try to damage you.
- They are hard to hurt, as they must be out of their shells to take damage.
- They are basically just like the Palinurus.
- Just have your partner knock them up into the air and send them into a wall, an electric field, or another guardian.
- Alpha Sections Interrogator
- I'm calling this floating turret robot an interrogator since it reminds me of the one in Star Wars.
- It can zap you at close range and use a powerful laser to hurt you.
- The best tactic is to just give it a good whack with your staff to stun it and knock its laser off target.
- Then you can just get the stunned robot into a nearby electrical field to kill it.
- Note: They start to use shields more effectively later in the game. They may require a bit of dodging and maneuvering to get around the shield.
- The Alpha Sections
- It will be a little bit before you actually have to fight these guys.
- They are completely armored and effectively impervious to damage.
- Your only option is to damage their air tank. This will leave them confused and unable to attack you.
- You can then finish them off by giving them another good kick.
- Be careful though, another soldier many come over and repair their air tank.
- Stealth is obviously a big help in taking out the guards.
- You don't get much of a reward for killing them, so just sneak past them when possible.
- If they do spot you and start swinging their hammer, then you need to run. A head-to-head fight usually isn't worth it. Their attack takes away a lot of health and they are relentless.
- Run away and jump down into a nearby sewer area (There are usually places to escape from them near any guard patrol). They will stop and request "Zone Clearing Authorization."
- A little orb will then fly in and mark the area where they think you are with a bunch of red lasers. You have one second to escape the lasers before they charge up and kill anything caught in their field.
- Tip: The exception to this is the upgraded staff attack. The orbs from the charged attack can get behind them and hit their air tanks, so a standard fight isn't as disastrous.
- Alpha Sections Sensors
- You'll run into these occasionally in the game.
- They are little flying robots that shine a girl light down.
- If you are caught in the light, you are zapped by the bot.
- There isn't a way to kill them, you just have to move past them when they are away.
- Alpha Sections Turret
- You will only have to deal with these a few times thankfully.
- They are an instant kill turret.
- If you are spotted by an Alpha Sections soldier, the turret will focus on you and fire a shot within one second. You can dodge it with a near instantaneous roll, but you are basically dead if you get spotted.
- Alpha Sections Flying Unit
- This flying unit is a rare enemy.
- You'll fight one in the Slaughterhouse and a few near the end of the game.
- They use their jets to stay out of your attack range.
- The only way to beat them is with a charged super attack or several hits with your disk launcher.
Game Tips
- Always be on the lookout for low walls. These almost always present a stealth opportunity. Spotting them quickly will make getting around guard patrols easier.
- Don't be afraid to run. You aren't supposed to fight fair with the Alpha Sections. Fall back and let things settle down if you get spotted.
- Observe paths. The Alpha Sections are very predictable in their guard routes. You should be able to spot their patterns quickly.
- Don't be stingy with your money. You won't have a lot of opportunities to buy things during missions, so feel free to upgrade Jade as much as possible before you set out.
- Take it slow. Don't just rush into the mission. Enjoy the changes in the game world that occur as more and more of the population sides with you.
- If it feels right...do it. The game is incredibly intuitive. If you feel like you should be able to do something, then you should at least try it.
Game Structure and Guide Notes
- Beyond Good & Evil is an incredibly non-linear game.
- Your only limitation before starting the next IRIS mission is getting enough pearls to buy the upgrades.
- You can acquire the pearls in a number of ways. More open up as the game continues.
- This walkthrough will go mission by mission.
- I will give as much information as I can about the different areas you can explore before under taking the actual IRIS mission.
- This will all be continued under the "Prep" category.
