  • Fight to the Death

All Bettas are highly territorial and will expand their crown fins when they feel threatened. The males are especially aggressive and many varieties, including the Siamese Fighting Fish will fight to the death when they encounter each other.

During the 1850s, Betta fighting became so popular as a betting sport in Siam (now Thailand) that it was licensed and taxed by the king. Consequently, people began selectively breeding Bettas to produce desired characteristics such as the brilliant colors and highly aggressive temperament that now distinguish most captive species.
