Beth Ditto is the lead singer of the indie rock band Gossip.
In November 2006, she was selected by NME as the "coolest person in rock." Ditto is an outspoken gay rights activist and feminist. Ditto, who weighs 210 pounds, appeared nude on the cover of NME and in On Our Backs, a women-run lesbian erotica magazine. She refused to play in-store shows for the British clothing retailer Topshop because they don't carry larger sizes.
Ditto currently pens an advice column for the British newspaper The Guardian. Appearing on Fridays, it's entitled "What Would Beth Ditto Do?"
About Gossip
Gossip is a three-piece indie rock band fronted by Ditto. The band was formed in 1999 in Searcy, Arkansas. The trio relocated to Olympia, Washington that same year to join the roster at independent label K Records and release their eponymous EP. Since that time, the band has released three full-length studio albums.
Now based in Portland, Oregon, Gossip has attracted attention for their high energy performances and the outspoken Ditto, who has never held back on the subjects of sexuality, body image and feminism. The group's hit single "Standing in the Way of Control" was written as a response to the Bush administration's decision to deny gay people the right to marry.
The band toured in 2007 with the Logo channel's True Colors Tour, which raised money for the Human Rights Campaign, the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lobbying group in the United States.
