Oscar History
The first edition of the Academy Awards was held on May 12, 1929. Fifteen statuettes were passed out in this edition, the first-ever Academy Award going to Emil Jannings for Best Actor. In the following years, the awards grew, causing more people to attend. By 1942, the Academy had to move operations to Grauman's Chinese Theater.
