The nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category for the 83rd annual Academy Awards were announced on January 25, 2011. Winners will be announced On February 27, 2001 at 8 p.m. EST on February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

The 2011 Academy Awards offered up nominations for Best Supporting Actress to Melissa Leo and Amy Adams for their roles in The Fighter, Helena Bonham Carter for The King's Speech, Hailee Steinfield for True Grit and Jacki Weaver for Animal Kingdom.http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/83/nominees.html 

Nominees for 2010 included Mo'Nique for her role in Precious, Penelope Cruz for Nine, Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart, and Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga, both nominated for Up in the Air. Mo'Nique walked away with the golden statue.

The first edition of the Academy Awards was held on May 12, 1929. Fifteen statuettes were passed out in this edition, the first-ever Academy Award going to Emil Jannings for Best Actor. In the following years, the awards grew, causing more people to attend. By 1942, the Academy had to move operations to Grauman's Chinese Theater.
