Tom Hanks presented The Hurt Locker as the winner of the Best Picture award at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on March 7, 2010. The year 2010 was the first time in 67 years that the field of nominees was expanded to include ten films. This marked only the second time in Oscar history that this decision had been made. The previous occasion had been in 1943 when Casablanca won the best picture award. http://www.empireonline.com/oscars2010/blog/ While Avatar was a huge hit at the box office, its chief rival on the night, The Hurt Locker, saw only a fraction of the box office take, but was critically praised.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jm2WlRTg2VlwOiK5ClSaPBfTsqJwD9EA3JH82
The eight other films in the category for the best picture of the year were The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jm2WlRTg2VlwOiK5ClSaPBfTsqJwD9EA3JH82
The field of nominees was widened for the 2010 ceremony, up from the usual field of five. Officials of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences increased the number of contenders, hoping to draw a wider TV audience, some of whom may have felt the category had become too predictable.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jm2WlRTg2VlwOiK5ClSaPBfTsqJwD9EA3JH82
The Hurt Locker took home a total of six awards at the ceremony, this was more than any other film. Other award victories included Best Sound Editing (Paul N.J. Ottosson), Best Sound Mixing (Paul N.J. Ottosson and Ray Beckett), Best Original Screenplay (Mark Boal), Best Editing (Bob Murawski and Chris Innis) and Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow). Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to ever win a best director Academy Award.
