According to the Grammy guidelines, the "Best New Artist" award goes to a new artist who "releases... the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." It does not necessarily have to be the artist's debut album, though that is often the case.
In 1990, the "Best New Artist" trophy was revoked from Milli Vanilli after it was discovered that neither member of the duo actually sang on their album. It remains the only incident where a Grammy had ever been stripped from a winner.
At the 2008 Grammy ceremony, Amy Winehouse won the award on account of her album Back To Black.
