The New Tenants was the winner of the 2010 Oscar for Best Live Action Short, announced on March 7, 2010. The category as it is known today came into existence at the 1974 awards ceremony. This disturbing film was based on the true story of a family in the aftermath of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986, and a father who stealthily returns to the family's hastily evacuated apartment to steal a door.
Miracle Fish (from Australia)
Eight-year-old Joe is the main character of this Australian short, in which Joe falls asleep in his school's sick bay only to awaken to an entirely empty school. Joe has fantastical notions of an alien abduction, though in actuality, the reasons behind the disappearance are much more mundane, if a little scary.
Kavi (from the United States and India)
This film won the 2009 Student Academy Award and details the life of a young boy named Kavi, whose parents work in indentured servitude. Kavi dreams of attending school and learning to play cricket but simply does not have those options. The film was directed by USC film student Gregg Helvey.
The New Tenants (from the United States and Denmark)
This short stars Vincent D'Onifrio and Jamie Harrold as a gay couple who unknowingly move into an apartment previously occupied by a murdered drug dealer. This film is based on a short story by Anders Thomas Jensen, who won the Oscar in this category in 1999.
Instead of Abracadabra (from Sweden)
The fifth nominee in the Best Live Action Short category is actually a comedy, starring 25-year-old Tomas, who is living with his parents while attempting to become a magician.
