Winner - ''The Hurt Locker''
Each year, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar to the editor or team of editors judged to have done the best job editing a film during the previous year. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards, which were held on March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, California, are no exception. Bob Murawski and Chris Innis were honored with the 2010 Oscar for their work on The Hurt Locker
The nominations for 2010, which are decided each year, by the 200+ members of the Academy's editing branch, included the following five films:
- Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua and James Cameron for their work on Avatar
- Julian Clarke for his work on District 9
- Bob Murawski and Chris Innis for their work on The Hurt Locker
- Sally Menke for her work on Inglourious Basterds
- Joe Klotz for his work on Precious (2009 fIlm)
Although film editors may not be as high-profile as others in the film industry, such as actors, directors, and even screenwriters, their work on films is no less important. Film editing has been referred to as the "invisible art," since it is up to the editor to seamlessly link scenes together in an appropriate order, and, along with the director, decide which scenes make it into the final cut. Although the Oscar is usually presented to the main, or "above the line," editor, an entire team is usually involved in the editing process.
For nearly the previous 20 years, since 1981, every picture that has won the "Best Picture" award has also been nominated in the best editing category. In the entire history of the Academy Awards, only nine films have received the best picture award without also being nominated in the best editing category. If this tend holds true for 2010, it implies that Avatar, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Precious, or Inglorious Basterds will take home the the coveted best picture Oscar.
Editors Bob Murawski and Chris Innis were honored with the 2010 Oscar for their work on the award-winning film, The Hurt Locker. The speech was slightly awkward, as Murawski and Innis attempted to speak over each other in order to save time.
