Best Director Oscar Nominees

On January 25, 2011, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards, including the nominees for the “Best Directing” category. The Academy Award for “Best Directing” is given to honor the greatest achievement in directing done for a film released in 2010. The nominees are Joel and Ethan Coen for the remake of the John Wayne film True Grit; Darren Aronfsky for the ballet thriller Black Swan; David O. Russell for The Fighter; Tom Hooper for the Edward VI bio-pic ‘’The King’s Speech’’; and David Fincher for The Social Network, the story of social media site Facebook and its creator Mark Zuckerberg.http://oscar.go.com/nominations

The 82nd Academy Awards “Best Directing” honor went to Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker. Other nominees competing with her included James Cameron for Avatar and Quentin Tarantino for Inglorious Basterds. The 83rd Academy Awards ceremony will take place Sunday, February 27, 2011. Best Director Oscar History

The Academy Awards category for "Best Directing" is one of the most prestigious awards given each year at the Oscars, and is on par with the "Best Picture" category. The "Best Directing" category was first awarded in 1928 with Frank Borzage winning for best dramatic picture and Lewis Milestone winning for best comedic picture (this was the first and only time the award was given separately for comedic and dramatic work.) Since that time, it has been awarded to some of the most well-known directors, including Frank Capra, who won three times (It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take it With You) and John Ford, who won four times (The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, The Informer, The Quiet Man.) More recent repeat winning directors have included Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood.
