US News Best Colleges Methodology
U.S. News gathers data from up to 15 indicators of academic excellence. Each factor is assigned a weight, and then the colleges in each category are ranked against their peers.http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/best-colleges/2008/08/21/how-we-calculate-the-rankings.html
Many colleges, however, are unranked and listed separately from the America's Best Colleges list. There are several reasons a college cannot be ranked. For instance, if a college does not use SAT or ACT in admission decisions for first-time, first-year, degree-seeking applicants; if the total enrollment at the college is less than 200 students; there are a large proportion of nontraditional students; or there were no first year students (i.e., "upper-division schools"). In addition, private, for-profit universities, and a few specialized schools in arts, business, and engineering were also not ranked in the America's Best Colleges list.http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/best-colleges/2008/08/21/how-we-calculate-the-rankings.html
