Bernard King is a retired professional basketball player. He played fourteen years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). King played for the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets. King’s position was small forward. He played for the University of Tennessee in college and was drafted to the New Jersey Nets in the 1977 NBA draft.
In 2006 King was selected by TNT Network as one of the sixty greatest players in NBA history. Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley were among the panelists who selected King. Bernard King retired in 1993 with the New Jersey Nets. On February 13, 2007, King’s number 53 was retired at the University of Tennessee.
College Career
King attended the University of Tennessee from 1974-1977. NBA Career
King was drafted in the 1977 draft by the New Jersey Nets. In his rookie season he led the team in scoring with an average of 24.2 points per game. He made the NBA All-Rookie Team. During the 1979-1980 season he was traded to the Utah Jazz. King was then traded to the Golden State Warriors before the 1980-1981 season. He averaged 21.9 points that season and was named NBA Comeback Player of the Year. During the 1981-1982 season he made his first All-Star Game while averaging 23.2 points per game. In 1982 King signed with the New York Knicks. His scoring average was 21.9 points per game his first season with the Knicks. He made his second All-Star team in 1983-84 averaging 26.3 points per game. In 1984-1985 King led the NBA in scoring with a 32.9 points per game. King then moved to the Washington Bullets in 1987.
