The Berlin Wall divided East Berlin and West Berlin from August 13, 1961 until November 9, 1989 Berlin City Web site: The Berlin Wall (2008). It was built by the communist German Democratic Republic to stop East Germans fleeing to West Berlin. The Berlin Wall consisted of an inner and outer wall with an area in between called the "death strip." Guards were posted along the wall with shoot-to-kill orders. It became a symbol of the Cold War and the division between communism and capitalism. Several sections of the wall stand as memorials today.
