Bergamot Essential Oil is used in Aromatherapy, Holistic, and Homeopathic treatments.
Bergamot Essential Oil is extracted by cold pressing the fruit rinds of Citrus bergamia Risso, a type of Orange tree. Bergamot oranges are grown primarily in Calabria, Italy. Bergamot can be grown in other tropical locations, but is not cold-tolerant. The gentle, clean fragrance makes bergamot essential oil useful for elevating mood. Bergamot is a popular flavoring, most notably in Earl Grey tea, but has also been used in Italy and Southern France as a folk remedy.http://www.stanleykrippner.com/papers/Calabria2004Rev_1B_.htm/ref>
Background
Bergamot is a bitter orange variety. Most citruses, including varieties of oranges, originally came from Asia. Trade along the silk road lead to the eventual export of citrus trees to Europe and eventually to the Americas.http://books.google.com/books?id=GlegSA1GLOgC&pg=PP1&dq=Citrus:+A+History&ei=1sziSpj_CpWGkASYsYGIDA#v=onepage&q=&f=false The extraction of essential oil from bergamot oranges began started as a folk remedy but developed further when it the oils were used for perfume production.
