Benny Goodman was a Jazz clarinetist and bandleader who was one of the main innovators of the Big Band and Swing sound. Some of his nicknames included "The Professor," "Swing's Senior Statesman," and "The King of Swing." Goodman also broke through racial barriers in the 1930s by hiring African-Americans like Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton at a time when segregation was still enforced.
