Bengal (Cat)

Bengals are a hybrid breed that was created from crossing the Asian leopard cat (ALC) with a domestic cat to achieve an "exotic" cat with a domestic temperament. Domestic breeds that have been used in Bengal breeding programs include the Egyptian Mau, Abyssinian, Burmese,Bombay, Ocicat, and British Shorthair.

Bengals must be at least four generations away from a cross with the Asian Leopard Cat to be considered "show quality", but cats just two or three generations removed may be sold by breeders as pets. If purchasing a Bengal as a pet, it is important to ask the breeder to be clear about the prospective pet's lineage, as this can be a strong indicator of temperament and behavior.

The price for Bengals ranges from $300 for an adult pet quality cat to $1200-$2000 for a show quality kitten.http://animal-world.com/Cats/ExoticCats/BengalCat.php

Physical Description

The Bengal is a large, muscular cat with a tail that tapers to a rounded black tip. The head is rounded and features a broad nose, small ears, and large eyes that are oval-shaped and wide set. Eye coloration tends to be gold, green or aqua. The Bengal's fur is short, and it's coat is thick and soft.

Markings on the coat are often in solid spots, which are distinct even on the belly of the cat. Some Bengals have dark rosettes or a "marbled" coat, which means the pattern flows horizontally in a swirl. Recognized markings include Leopard (spotted tabby), Marble, Snow Leopard (ivory background with contrasting spots), Snow Marble, Sorrel, and Mink. The markings of show quality cats are evaluated based upon contrast between the spots and the background color, with sharp edges and distinct patterns being highly desirable. For Bengals having a Marbled pattern, the markings are derived from the classic tabby gene and have a somewhat random appearance; however, ideal patterns should overall present a strong horizontal flow.

Bengals often have an iridescent glow to their fur that gives their coats a glittery sheen.

Personality of the Bengal Cat

Despite its wild ancestry, the Bengal will have a domestic temperament providing it is at least three generations removed from the original crossing between a domestic and Asian Leopard Cat. Bengals tend to be social, affectionate cats that get along with other pets and do well with children provided they are not mistreated by them.

Bengals are lively and intelligent cats that enjoy plenty of exercise and can be taught to play fetch or walk on a leash. Some enjoy playing in water, and may be inclined to join their owners in the bathtub or swimming pool. They are extremely agile, and love to jump and climb.

Health Problems

The most common ailment that Bengals are prone to is feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Because HCM may not be evidenced by physical symptoms before death, it is important to ask your breeder whether the disease has presented itself in their kittens and to clarify if the cattery tests for the disorder. HCM may strike Bengals at any age, even as very young kittens. For peace of mind, you might want to have your Bengal cat tested for HCM by a veterinary cardiologist.

Bengals are also prone to diseases of the eye, including cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, and entropion (an inward rolling of the eyelid which requires surgery).http://www.gopetsamerica.com/profiles/bengal.aspx http://www.petinsurance.com/healthzone/pet-articles/pet-breeds/Bengal-Cats.aspx
