Bend It Like Beckham is a 2002 British film about two girls who play soccer in an all-women league and dream of becoming professional soccer players; the title refers to professional soccer player David Beckham and his ability to spin the ball as he kicks it, giving a curve or bend to the path of its flight. One of the girls, Jesminder (played by Parminder Nagra) comes from a traditional Sikh family, whom would like her to behave more like a "proper" woman and find herself a good man to marry. Jules, played by Kiera Knightley, is her friend who is also on the team and develops a crush on their coach. Despite its sunny and light premise, the film deals with issues of cultural awareness and bigotry.
