Ben Hogan was a professional golfer and is one of only five players to win a career Grand Slam (the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship).World Golf Hall of Fame: Ben Hogan Profile
Hogan's professional career, not to mention his life, was almost cut short on February 2, 1949, when the car he was driving was hit in a head-on collision by a bus in Van Horn, Texas. By leaning over to the passenger seat to shield his wife Valerie, Hogan may have saved them both from receiving the full impact of the crash. While he did suffer severe injuries to his legs, Hogan regained his form and won the 1950 U.S. Open seventeen months after the accident.Golf World: Player of the Decade: Ben Hogan (June 15, 2007)
