Belts have been worn by both men and women for centuries. In the military, the belt was used strictly for decoration up until World War I. The belt served as a way to make the wearer look slimmer in the waist and broader in the shoulders and chest as a means of intimidation. Political cartoons often poked fun at this notion with characters that appeared to be corseted.
Today, men typically wear belts with pants, which also serve to hold pants up. Women typically wear belts solely for fashion reasons.
