Bellingham WA History
The area that is now Bellingham was originally inhabited by several different Native American tribes, including the Lumi and Noosack tribes. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1792 under the command of captain George Vancouver, an English explorer. He named the town for Sir William Bellingham of the British Navy.http://www.bellingham-subdued-excitement.com/history-of-bellingham.html
The communities that form Bellingham today were originally four distinct towns of Fairhaven, Bellingham, Whatcom, and New Whatcom. The towns incorporated into a single community in 1904.http://www.bellingham-subdued-excitement.com/history-of-bellingham.html Since its inception, much of the city's economy was based on fishing and logging industries; by the 1950s, however, these resources were largely depleted. The city economy is now largely focused on tourism based on historic buildings, outdoor activities like skiing on Mount Baker, and cruises from the city harbor.http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=7904
