  • Known as British Honduras until 1973, Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America. It is bordered to the south and west by Guatemala, to the north by Mexico and to the east by the Caribbean Sea.

    Belize is a parliamentary democracy and member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Economically, it is among the poorest nations in Central America with 33.5% of the country living in poverty. What industry there is based in agriculture and tourism.

  • History

    The Mayan civilization spread to Belize around 1500 BC and flourished until 900 AD. There is a known history of British settlers in Belize from as early as 1638. The country became a defacto British colony in the late 18th century and a Crown Colony in 1871. The country was known as British Honduras until 1973 when it was renamed "Belize." The country gained full independence from the British in 1981. Throughout the country's history, Guatemala has claimed Belize as a province. Border disputes exist even today.
