Belgian Sheepdog

Categories: Pets | Dogs
  • The Belgian Sheepdog is a hardy dog breed that can adapt to extreme climates and temperatures, yet moves with grace and agility. Developed in Belgium as a herding dog, the Belgian Sheepdog is versatile working dog that is easily trained to perform a variety of tasks. In Europe, this breed is known as the Groenendael or Chien de Berger Beige.
  • Background

Belgian Sheepdogs have historically served as police dogs and were often used in search and rescue missions. During WWI, they were used as military dogs. Today, they are most often kept as family companions. Belgian sheepdogs are highly intelligent and have strong instincts to protect their family and territory, making them excellent personal protection dogs and guard dogs.

Belgian Sheepdogs are easily trained and devoted to their owners, but they need a job that keeps them physically and mentally challenged. A bored Belgian Sheepdog can be quite destructive! A well-raised dog of this breed is confident with strangers, but not overly aggressive unless the situation calls for action.

  • Is the Belgian Sheepdog Right for Your Family?

The Belgian Sheepdog, like most herding dogs, needs an experienced owner who can handle these independently-minded dogs with a firm, but gentle, upper hand. Belgian Sheepdogs may become overly timid or aggressive if they are not socialized well at an early age.

The breed generally has strong herding instincts and may try to herd the family's children and other pets, behavior which must be discouraged. Not recommended for families with very young children, but good for families with active, older children.
