In this video, Mahalo's makeup expert Katie Gurvin shows you how to properly apply blush to give you a healthy, rosy glow.
Step 1: Select a Color
To create a natural look, select a blush that complements your skin tone. Although the color you choose will depend on your personal preference, pinching your cheeks will help you estimate a similar shade. Try out the blush at the store, but be sure to completely remove one blush before trying out the next. A shade of blush similar to your lip color (without lipstick) will also create a natural flush when applied. As a general rule, lighter colors look more natural on fair skin, while deeper and more vibrant shades of orange and pink suit darker complexions.
Step 2: Use the Right Brush
Step 3: Find Your "Apples"
To create the most natural effect, you want to apply a small amount of blush to the apples of your cheeks. To find the apples of your cheeks, smile while looking in a mirror. The apple is the fleshiest part of your cheek.
Step 4: Apply Blush
Get some blush onto your brush by dabbing it gently into the cosmetic. Gently tap the brush to remove any excess blush. Use a gentle, circular motion, beginning near the bottom of the apple of your cheek and working slowly upward. If you feel you have applied too much blush, gently blot the excess away with a tissue or apply some powder over the blush. If possible, check your color in natural light to ensure that you have created a look you are comfortable with.
