Background
Started in 1979 as a hardcore Punk band, the boys eventually hooked up with Def Jam Records producer Rick Rubin who helped them transition into a Rap group.
Career
Their first album, License to Ill became an immediate smash, hitting #1 on the Billboard music charts and spawning the classic single "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)". After parting ways with Rubin, the band signed with Capitol Records and released two critically and successful albums, 1989's Paul's Boutique and 1992's Check Your Head. Their next two albums, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty both debuted at #1 on the charts, cementing their status as one of the most consistently successful groups of their time.
Since Then
In 1996, Adam Yauch (MCA) and the rest of the group organized the first Tibetan Freedom Concert. Their last release, an instrumental album titled The Mix-Up, was released on June 26, 2007. The group's next album is expected to be released sometime in May 2009.Rolling Stone: Beastie Boys To Reissue “Paul’s Boutique” With Original Artwork... (December 29, 2008)
