Beardsley Zoo is located in Bridgeport, Connecticut and is the only zoo in the state. The zoo contains over 300 animals, representing mostly North and South American species.
Under Governor Jodi Rell's proposed state budget plan, the Beardsley Zoo's all-ready low budget of $380,000 annually would be cut over two years. The budget cut was widely seen as a devastating blow to the state's only zoo, both criticized and protested in the media.
