Bealls began its history in 1915 as a dry goods store called The Dollar Limit. In 1918, Robert Beall, Sr, the founder, changed the name to The Five Dollar Limit due to post war inflation. In 1940 his son Robert Beall, Jr. joined the company and left only to serve a short stint in the army. Returning in 1946, he was present when they changed the name to Beall's Department Store.
