Since it broke ground in 1981, BC Place, located in downtown Vancouverjust north of False Creek, has remained an immediately recognizable fixture in the Vancouver skyline, as well as an overall historic British Columbia landmark. Besides hosting music concerts and entertainment, as well as major events such as the 1986 Expo, BC Place is the home of the BC Lions, a team which is a member of the Canadian Football League. Additionally, BC Place houses the BC Sports Hall of Fame, and a monument to beloved BC cancer research and athletic icon Terry Fox.
As Canada's first domed arena, BC Place is also the largest air-supported stadium in the world. Though the stadium is often overshadowed by the neighboring General Motors Place, which is the home of the highly popular hockey team the Vancouver Canucks, BC Place certainly regained a fair bit of prestige when it was selected to be the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, as well as the site for the nightly Victory Ceremonies. Since the Ceremonies are naturally the first and last impressions that viewers around the globe will have of the host city, it is no doubt that BC Place will receive a boost of funding and investment after the Games. For instance, plans are already underway to refurbish the stadium and construct a retractable roof. http://www.bcplacestadium.com/
