  • In October 2008, the National Archives released a script of an announcement the BBC was considering recording in the event of a nuclear attack. The script was drafted in 1974, at a time when there were tensions between the Soviet Union and United States. The announcement begins with, "This is the wartime broadcasting service. This country has been attacked with nuclear weapons."The New York Times: Britain Scripted Nuclear war Message (October 2, 2008)

"This is chilling to read. You see concern that any such announcements should be made by a BBC voice. They feel a real need to reassure the public that in the event of a nuclear catastrophe the BBC is still there." -- Mark Dunton, National ArchivesThe New York Times: Britain Scripted Nuclear war Message (October 2, 2008)
