Battle Royale is a Japanese action/horror film released in 2000 that is closely adapted from a novel of the same name, written by Koushun Takami and published in 1999. The plot involves a dystopian future Japan where 42 high school kids are forced to fight their classmates to the death on a deserted island. It saw theatrical release only in Japan, but became popular in the United States as well because of its complex thematic and graphically violent content. A sequel, Battle Royale II: Requiem, was released in 2003.
Plot
In Japan's near future, economic collapse leads to widespread teenage rebellion. The government institutes an act where one high school class a year is put on a deserted island and forced to fight to the death. If after three days a single student has not killed the rest of the class, explosive devices mounted on all the students' necks will kill them all. The movie follows one class as it believes it is being taken on a class trip, and awakes to find they have been placed on the island. Each member of the class takes up the fight, many of whom reveal their complex personal histories as they try to survive.
