Blizzard Entertainment made the announcement at Blizzcon that Battle.net website is going to be the one stop area for the joining of World of Warcraft, Diablo as well as all the other games that Blizzard has created. The point is to make a more social network area where players can chat between realms as well as chat from one game to another. This also allows access to several Blizzard games without having to remember different user names and passwords. There is more than is shared with this new system. There will be common marketplace access and they plan on having competitive play between the severs as well as the already in place matching for instances and raids from across servers.
The registration is free and is not complicated at all. Basically all you are doing is changing your account name to your email address. This will be the new simple method of finding the newest Beta programs and the newest game releases, chat and other "yet to be announced" changes.
Battle.net is a free service to the game players of all the various Blizzard games. As soon as Starcraft 2 is released it will be added to the Battle.net community.
With Starcraft2 just like with World Of Worldcraft, there will be the player matching which allows the players to join with others to compete head to head or work together. You will be able to join your real life friends and also play with them, it is going to use their rela names or a series of nicknames so that remembering the character name and server will not be necessary. Battle.Net will work with Starcraft, Diablo and World of Warcraft.

Blizzard Battle.Net accouncement
This video presentation was shown at Blizcon and is a training tool to let the players know that they will soon be signing in on one site no matter what Blizzard game you are playing. This will keep one password per person and not having to keep the different log in names and passwords separate. The makers show how this can access other people from other games while playing in an offline mode.
