Batgirl, referred to as Bat-Girl in early incarnations, is the name of a hero in the DC Universe that has been used by many different characters. They are commonly sidekicks affiliated with Batman and first appeared in 1961. The most prominent and long-standing character to carry the Batgirl name was Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City police commissioner, James Gordon.
Gordon: Batgirl to Oracle
Although Barbara Gordon was the longest-running Batgirl, she retired from the role in 1988 after she was shot by The Joker and paralyzed from the waist down in Alan Moore's Batman: The Killing Joke. Gordon's character then reinvented herself as Oracle, an information broker and member of the Birds of Prey.
