Bates College is a private institution of higher education which grants undergraduate degrees. The college is located in Lewiston, Maine, 35 miles north of Portland. The school's athletic teams belong to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
Bates College History
Bates College was founded in 1855 as a coeducational college. It did not discriminate, admitting students "without regard to race, religion, national origin, or sex."Bates College: A Brief History It was named for Benjamin E. Bates, a Boston businessman who financially supported founder Oren B. Cheney's idea for the college.
