Baten Kaitos Origins is a role-playing game and is the second installment in the Baten Kaitos series. It is set 20 years before the first Baten Kaitos game, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, explaining much of its back story.
Story
Baten Kaitos Origins tells is a prequel to the previous Baten Kaitos and tells of the beginning of the universe. Sagi, the titular hero of the game, is a "spiriter" - a person who is able to talk with guardian spirit. You play as the guardian spirit. Sagi has signed up for a military squad from Alfard to get revenge for the servitude the empire has placed on his home town of Hassaleh Islands. Sagi and his companions must prevent the expansion of the empire by all means.
Gameplay
Baten Kaitos Origins uses a card-battle system based on 'magnus'--cards that are imbued with the essence of powerful attacks, magic, healing items, and more The deck you create will be made up of abilities that you choose to enter and will be the ones used during the entire fight. During the turn-based battles, you are able to choose from a selection of cards dealt to you whether to use them or discard them. Each card has a 'spirit number' which tells you the attack strength of each card with 1 being the weakest and so on. You can chain these attacks together to pull off stronger attacks. When you play your cards you accumulate 'magnus power' that allows you to use your most powerful ability. As you play and level the number of cards you can hold increases as does the number of cards you can discard. The game also allows you to perform relay attacks and 'ES combos' with the help of your teammates. Relay attacks allow you to chain all three of your characters attack into one combo. EX combos are combinations of cards from each character that leads to a special attack. Managing your deck and having enough heal cards as well as attack and magic cards are important to ensure success in later battles, especially with bosses. Leveling up is a bit different than most games. You gain more HP but rather than increasing your attack strength or MP, you gain access to better card options. The game is 40+ hours long.
