Basseterre History
Basseterre has a history dating back to the early 1600s. That was when explorers from France discovered the city and gave it the name Basseterre, which means "lowland" in French. In 1727, after the French had been populating the island city for 100 years, English settlers expelled them. Since that time, the city's Georgian architecture, as well as many of the city's sites, have had more of an English influence.http://www.destination360.com/caribbean/st-kitts-and-nevis/basseterre This includes The Circus, a Basseterre site that was modeled after London's Piccadilly Circus.http://www.geographia.com/stkitts-nevis/knpnt02.htm
