The basset hound originated in France in the 16th century, from the desire for a canine that could hunt small game and be followed on foot. The dog was used to hunt rabbits, foxes and pheasants. The breed is a cross of a Basset Artisien Normand and a normal Artisien Normand (bloodhound), giving this dog it’s famous long ears and long, low hanging body and keen sense of smell. Even the name of this breed, “Basset” is derived from the work bas, meaning dwarf or low thing in the French language.
Basset Hounds are lovable, friendly, calm and affectionate in nature, but can also be sensitive and stubborn. They get along well with people, and other dogs and pets, and are good with children. Basset Hounds love to be a lap dog and do not make a good guard dog due to their friendliness.
Basset Hound - Health
The long ears of a Basset do not allow good circulation of air, making them prone to infections. Owners should clean the dog’s ears once a week. The Basset Hound's droopy eyes should also be kept clean of debris, and the nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly.
If kept indoors, Basset Hounds have difficulty getting an adequate amount of exercise. They need to have time outdoors daily for proper exercise to kept trim. One health concern of breed of dog, is weight. Avoid over feeding them at all cost. The basset hound can not afford to be overweight because of their long bodies. This will place to much strain and stress on the legs and spine. They are also prone to bloating, so it's best to feed them smaller meals about 3 times a day.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bassethound.htm
