Basil is a perennial green leafy herb native to India and other tropical climates in Asia. It is an important herb in Italian, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisines.
Basil is most potent when used fresh and is the featured ingredient in pesto, an Italian herb sauce made with garlic, olive oil, pine nuts and a hard cheese such as Parmesan Cheese or Romano Cheese.

Cooking and Storing Tips
The fresh herb can keep for several days in plastic bags in the refrigerator, or in the freezer, after being blanched in hot water. When cooking, it is best to add basil at the last moment since heat diminishes the flavor.
