Baruto is a sumo wrestler (rikishi) with the second-highest rank of ozeki.
Born in Estonia on November 5th, 1984 with the name Kaido Hoovelson, he played basketball and won a judo championship in Estonia before being introduced to sumo wrestling. His fighting name Baruto is based on the Japanese for Baltic Sea.
Baruto originally joined the Mihogaseki heya, or stable, but has since moved to the newly-formed stable called Onoe.
He started his tournament career in May 2004 and swiftly moved up the ranks to juryo. His rise to the elite ranks was halted by appendicitis in late 2005 but, in March 2006, he won the juryo tournament with a record of 15-0, only the fourth rikishi ever to achieve this. He was immediately promoted to the elite makuuchi ranks where he fights today.
Baruto was widely expected to be promoted to the second rank of ozeki if he could win 13 matches in the March 2010 basho. At the end of the basho he had 14 victories, losing only to yokozuna Hakuho. Subsequently, on March 31, 2010, the Sumo Association unanimously approved his promotion. He is only the second European, after Kotooshu, to reach this rank.http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/sports/173348/baruto-becomes-first-estonian-ozeki-sumo-wrestler
