Barry Larkin was a Major League Baseball player in the National League, for the Cincinnati Reds. He was drafted by Cincinnati in 1985, and made his Major League debut in August of 1986. Larkin played his entire career with the Reds, at the shortstop postiton, and was the team's captain from the 1997 season to the 2004 season, the first Reds' player to hold that position since Dave Concepcion's retirement in 1988.

Larkin enjoyed much success with the Reds. Setting himself apart as one of the MLB's best shortstops ever. He made the National League All Star team 12 times, was a 9 time Silver Slugger award winner, 3 time Gold Glove winner, the 1995 National League MVP, and the 1993 winner of the Roberto Clemente Award. He was also a 3 time winner of the Reds Ernie Lombardi MVP award. Larkin won a world series ring with the Reds in 1990, and led the Reds to the NLCS (National League Championship Series) against the Atlanta Braves, but lost in 6 games.

Barry Larkin announced retirement at the end of the 2004 season. He had stayed with the Cincinnati Reds for the whole of his 19 year career, 1986-2004, and in leaving, left a hole in the Reds' lineup that would be difficult to fill. After retiring Larkin worked with the Washington Nationals as a special assistant to the general manager, and signed with the MLB network as a studio analyst in 2008.
