Barney the purple dinosaur stole the hearts of parents and kids in 1992. On April 6,1992, the friendly Tyrannosaurus Rex debuted in the children's tv show Barney and Friends. The show that aired on PBS educated kids in a playful way through music, song and dance. Nowadays you can find Barney DVD's, Barney VHS tapes, Barney Toys, Barney Books and much more. Barney was the idea of a Dallas teacher named Sheryl Leach. In 1987 the purple dinosaur was first introduced through a series of straight to video releases. The Public Broadcasting System took notice and that's how the dinosaur ended up on television. Barney is 200 million years old and comes alive through the imagination of kids. Each episode starts with a small doll of the purple dinosaur. When kids need help solving a problem or when they have questions, they just imagine that the dinosaur comes to life. This is when the 6 foot singing dinosaur appears. He is known for being cuddly, huggable and for his many sing-a-long songs.

Over the years Barney has been portrayed by several people including Bob West, Carey Stinson and Dean Wendt. His voice is that of David Joyner. Besides the television show there are also various Barney videos available. Together with Jim Henson's Muppets and Mr. Rogers, Barney and Friends became a phenomenon.
