Barbara Mikulski's Political Career
Mikulski's political career began in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. She ran for and won a seat on the Baltimore City Council, serving in that position for five years. In 1976, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and represented Maryland's 3rd District in that capacity until 1986.
In 1986, Milkulski successfully ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first female Democrat to serve in the Senate. She was reelected in 1992, 1998, and again in 2004.
